- First off, you need to have an interest not only in Star Trek, but in creative writing as well. 95% of the activities done within the club are simulations. This means you will be involved with writing a lot of story segments. And you will need a reasonable amount of free time to be an active participant.
- Reporting to the CO of your assigned vessel.
- Notifying your CO of e-mail changes.
- Becoming familiar with the art of role playing.
- Helping your CO develop new storylines when old ones end.
- Actively participating in e-mail simms.
- Notifying your CO when you will be absent for an extended period of time.
- And lastly, keeping in contact with your CO.

Command has never been a simple matter. The Ship's CO has always borne a heavy load of responsibility. You will find this to hold true when you assume the role of CO of one of the club's vessels. The appointment of CO is not just a glorified title, it is a serious responsibility. You will be expected to carry out all of the duties listed below. If you do not feel that you can perform all of them competently, then you are not fit for command.
- Assigning new crew members to positions in your squadron and answering any questions that they may have.
- Getting bio's from the new crew members for the ships' webpage.
- Keeping a Ship's Log - minimum of one entry per week.
- Updating and maintaining your ship's webpage.
- Maintaining and providing an updated list containing the name, rank, position and e-mail address of each crew member on your ship.
- Ensuring that your squadron is constantly supplied with storylines.
- Training in new crew members on the art of role playing.
- Actively participating in the club.
- Supervising and coordinating the progress of e-mail simms.
- Recommending promotions and/or awards for crew members who rendered services above and beyond the call of duty.
- Maintaining order within your squadron and exercising discipline if necessary.
- And lastly, keeping in contact with your department director.

This club is still in it's infancy. Galaxy Exploration Command has not yet developed an effective system for advancing up the rank ladder. We are, however, in the process of devising just such a system.

Time served
in ranks from Cadet to Commander
are at the option of the ships CO and/or the Department Director. - Time
served as a Captain( before becoming eligible for promotion to
Commodore should not be less than six (6) months. - Time
served as a Commodore before becoming eligible for promotion
to
Rear Admiral should not be less than eight (8) months.
- Time
served as a Rear Admiral before becoming eligible for promotion to
Vice Admiral should not be less than ten (10) months.
- Time
served as a Vice Admiral before becoming eligible for promotion to
Admiral should not be less than twelve (12) months.
- Time served in any rank DOES NOT guarantee an automatic
promotion.
Admirality reserves the right to make promotions based on a majority vote regardless of time served in rank.
For now, we are basing promotions on judgements derived through observing the performance of the crew. We are trying to recognize outstanding performances that continue over a reasonable period of time. Crew members who keep up a steady submission of story segments that show an obvious effort to keep the storyline going and interesting are most likely to earn a promotion somewhere down the road. Obedience is another important factor that will determine whether a crew member receives a promotion or not. Regular attendance of simms held via e-mail is another element that Galaxy Exploration Command will observe.
There is one very important rule. ANY member of the Galaxy Exploration Command may recommend a crew member for promotion. If a crew member makes a post claiming that he/she deserves a promotion, the promotions officer will immediately send receipt of a promotion form to the Department Director and the Ship's CO. A CO or a Department Director can move a member up to one step below his or her own rank.(Ex. if the CO is a Captain, then the CO can promote personnel in his squadron up to the rank of Commander but you can not have more than two Captains on one vessel at any given time.If a Flag Officer is a Ship CO, the highest rank attainable by a member is Captain.
The reason for this rule is to guard against people with immature or impatient tendencies whose only concern is self glorification. Galaxy Exploration Command does not want to be pressured. We take the issue of rank seriously. If you want to attract our attention, rendering services above and beyond the call of duty is the way to do it - not hassling your Ship's CO.
Promotion from the rank of Commodore and above is in the hands of Admirality to determine. Such occurrences will be extremely rare. The same rule outlined earlier applies here as well.
